What Are The LASIK Eye Surgery Risks

Surgery is an intrusive procedure on your body, regardless of the body part you’re having operated. Therefore, even laser eye surgery has risks. In fact, studies in the late 1990s show that up to 5% of LASIK surgery patients experienced some problems after surgery. The good news is that LASIK surgeons today are keeping the percentage of people who suffer from LASIK eye surgery risks down to below 1%. This is especially the case if the candidates are thoroughly screened. Rarely do LASIK eye surgery risks include the chance of permanent or significant vision loss to the extent that your eyesight is worse than it was before the surgery.
LASIK eye surgery risks are usually associated with LASIK flaps. This is when the cornea is cut and lifted to have the actual eye re-shaped by the laser. The flap is then put back into place, creating a “natural bandage.” In traditional LASIK procedures, these flaps were cut by a bladed instrument called a microkeratome. However, flaps are now usually cut with a laser, which is a technology called IntraLase. Use of this technology reduces LASIK eye surgery risks because of heightened accuracy and fewer flap complications. IntraLase is more expensive, however. Potential candidates are given the option of whether they would prefer their cornea to be cut using a laser or a blade. As well, candidates are asked whether they would prefer traditional LASIK, which addresses vision anomalies such as astigmatism or myopia, or custom LASIK, which addresses more obscure irregularities in the eye.
LASIK eye surgery risks related to flaps depend on if the flap is cut incorrectly. If so, the cornea may not stick to the surface of the eye. As well, if the flap is cut too thin or think, it might wrinkle after being put back on the eye. The eye surface will then have an irregular shape and can distort vision. This condition is known as irregular astigmatism.
Irregular astigmatism that is a result of a less than smooth surface of the cornea can also become a LASIK eye surgery risk when the laser correction is not centered correctly on the eye. This LASIK eye surgery risk can result in conditions such as double vision or ghost images. If this is the case, re-treatment or enhancement of the eye might be necessary. As well, swelling or irregular healing of the cornea can cause double vision and ghost images. However, when the healing process takes its course, these problems will usually correct themselves.
Other LASIK eye surgery risks include irritation, infection, or inflammation of the eye. It can also include dry eye, redness, and visual distortions. Night vision problems can also occur, which are often characterized by halos or glare seen surrounding brightly lit objects at night.
